AI Image Upscaling with Real-ESRGAN: Make Blurry Photos Sharp Again
We upgraded our image upscaler from basic interpolation to Real-ESRGAN AI super-resolution. Learn how AI upscaling works, why it is better, and how to get the best results.
The Problem With Old-School Upscaling
For years, most online image upscalers used bicubic interpolation. It sounds fancy, but what it actually does is simple: it takes existing pixels and averages them to guess the color of new pixels. The result? A bigger image that looks softer, not sharper.
- Just stretches existing pixels
- Edges become blurry
- Text gets fuzzy
- No new detail created
- Reconstructs missing detail
- Edges stay sharp
- Text remains readable
- Learns from millions of images
How Real-ESRGAN Changes Everything
Real-ESRGAN is a deep learning model trained on millions of image pairs โ low-resolution originals and their high-resolution counterparts. Over time, it learns patterns: how skin texture looks at different scales, how text edges stay crisp, how natural gradients should flow.
Feed the low-res image
Upload your blurry or small photo โ 800ร600, 640ร480, whatever you have.
AI analyzes patterns
The neural network identifies edges, textures, and shapes in the image.
Reconstruct detail
It generates plausible high-resolution detail, filling in what interpolation cannot.
Get sharp result
Download your 2x or 4x enlarged image with real, crisp detail.
What We Built
Our upgraded AI Image Upscaler uses the ESRGAN-Slim model on TensorFlow.js, entirely in your browser.
2x Fast Mode
Quick upscaling for web and social media. Doubles resolution in seconds.
4x Best Mode
Maximum detail for print or high-res use. Quadruples resolution.
Patch Processing
Splits large images into tiles to avoid memory crashes on any device.
100% Private
Your image never leaves your device. Model caches locally after first use.
How to Get the Best Results
- Start with the best source you have. A slightly blurry original produces far better results than a tiny thumbnail.
- Use 2x for most cases. It is fast and produces good results. Only go 4x when you need the resolution.
- Try the sharpen slider. 10-20% post-sharpening makes edges pop without artifacts.
- Do not upscale JPEG artifacts. If your source is heavily compressed, clean up first, then upscale.
When AI Upscaling Falls Short
AI upscaling is powerful, but it is not magic. It works by guessing detail โ and sometimes it guesses wrong. Text in very small images can become garbled, fine patterns can get smoothed, and inputs under 200px leave too little information.
For these cases, try our AI Object Remover to clean distractions first, or Background Remover to isolate the subject before upscaling.
